Going Global

Where Keith tries to explain a Good Thing™

A customer recently sent me this note via our support system:

I've been using Mercury Mover for the last few months. I know that in the next version you are planning on to include window preset shortcuts. I just wanted to request that these shortcuts be able to be mapped directly to universal keyboard shortcuts, rather than requiring one to invoke Mercury Mover first.
As i responded with why it's a Good Thing™ to have users bring up MercuryMover in order to invoke a shortcut my blog sense started tingling, so here's the skinny. My reasoning in requiring that you first bring up MercuryMover before invoking a shortcut is:
  1. not add a lot of global keyboard shortcuts (aka hot keys) to anyone's system.
  2. have simpler hot keys for MercuryMover's shortcuts
The first is pretty self explanatory. For the second, since we won't have to compete with any other system wide shortcuts, then the MercuryMover ones can be very simple (ie, the "q" key could move a window to the top left of the screen, and the "z" key could move it to the bottom left).

Having said all of this, i truly feel that i'm only partially in charge of the feature set for MercuryMover. The other party is of course MercuryMover's users. While i'm empowered to make these decisions by fiat, it behooves me to secure the advice and consent of the users.

So dear users, care to weigh in?

Re: Going Global

Just to get this discussion started: for the reasons you give, I agree with you. Keep it that you invoke the app first.

BTW, when is this mentioned new version due? Is thee anything on the website about the features you are planning to add?

Re: Going Global

There actually isn't a full list that's publicly available. I'll try to put one together and blog it this weekend.
